Promotional Factors

The main purpose of a music video is to sell the song to the audience and make sure its something they want to hear. I think that the most important method of doing this is using advertising. Years ago before technology dramatically developed, the revenue depended purely on the sales of the song and music video, and that was how they made their money. Yet nowadays, there are many more ways of making money because of the extension of income. Music videos are a good way for companies to make money; it cashes in on the success of a song, and helps to boost sales of other products linked to the singer. A music video extends the income of the singer-they would get money for doing the video, and from promotional duties and products. It is proved that a music video can connect to wider audience than a plain audio track can. The combination of advertising through television, Internet, music channels, radio, Cd's and downloads all contributes to how successful the music video is and how much income it creates.

As well as these,Youtube, Twitter and Facebook help to make music videos go global, because they are easily accessible. Youtube provides links to songs, on Facebook you can 'like' videos and on twitter, the news of new music videos are spread by word of mouth by the artist or someone who listens to that artist. This means British music can be viewed in Europe and America and vice versa, and this causes the artist' fame to rocket, and become known in lots of other countries. Once they are known, they are encouraged to want to buy their music. Along with all this, it creates publicity for the singer, and other producers may approach them with propositions for music videos.

Another purpose is synergy used throughout films and TV programmes. Synergy is where two products or companies combine to make a video, and use the video as a platform to give them success in different areas. For example a music video may be made to increase publicity for a film, but may prove successful in its own right. It would includes clips from the film to show its specifically about what it's promoting, but also means well for the singer too. In TV programmes, such as the soaps or reality TV shows, we may regularly hear artist' music being played in the background. This helps promote music by introducing the song to a wider audience. An exmaple of this is the music vdeo for 'You Know My Name ' by Chris Cornell, which is he official song and video for Casino Royale(2006), whom Chris sung and starred in. It became very successful and as it was released as a seperate single, the sales of it highly increased and still remains popular to this day. From the success he created, he won several awards for his work with Casino Royale which is a massive acheivement.
